Your summer tour journey starts when you land in Longyearbyen, the northernmost town on the planet. After checking into your hotel, you’ll have some downtime to explore this unique Arctic hub, check out local shops, and enjoy authentic Arctic fare at one of the town’s restaurants.

Walrus Safari (3 hours): On day two of the Svalbard summer tour, you’ll start things off on the right foot with an exhilarating Walrus Safari. After boarding a hybrid boat, you’ll head out to Borebukta Bay to see the majestic walruses in their natural habitat. Known as social animals that enjoy everything from beaches to ice floes during the summer months, walruses will be up close and personal on day two.

ATV Safari (3 hours): Later in the day, you’ll get on an ATV for a thrilling ride through Adventdalen. Historical sites, cultural monuments, and possible sightings of Svalbard reindeer are highlights. You’ll set sail on a hybrid catamaran, a state-of-the-art vessel, to see glaciers and wildlife up close and personal. Because of the catamaran’s quiet engine, wildlife like Arctic birds, polar bears, and seals won’t be as easily frightened off by the ship’s approach. You’ll glide by the Nordenskiöld Glacier, named after Finnish geologist Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, and see Pyramiden, an eerie Soviet-era ghost town.

Svalbard Summer Tour FAQ

Summer season runs from late May to early September, with the Midnight Sun shining 24 hours a day between late April and late August. This is the ideal time for boat trips, wildlife viewing, and exploring without the extreme winter cold.

Most visitors do not need a visa to enter Svalbard itself, but you may need one for Norway, as all travel to Svalbard goes via mainland Norway. Always check your country’s requirements before booking.

Even in summer, temperatures are cool (often between 3–10 °C / 37–50 °F). Bring layered clothing, a warm jacket, gloves, hat, comfortable walking shoes, and a camera with spare batteries.

Yes, Svalbard is generally safe for visitors. However, the Arctic environment is remote and wild, so guided tours are recommended. Local guides are trained in polar bear safety and equipped with necessary emergency gear.

Polar bears live year-round in Svalbard, but sightings depend on location, season, and luck. Summer tours focus more on walruses, seabirds, glaciers, and Arctic landscapes, but there is always a chance of a polar bear encounter.
